Chaplin Farrant Architects Celebrate 75 Years

During 2013, one of Norwich’s oldest architectural practices will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Established as an architects on Cathedral Close in 1938 by John Chaplin, the firm has grown into a multidiscipline company offering architecture, structural engineering and quantity surveying with offices across the eastern & southern regions of England.

Much of John Chaplin’s work in the earlier days involved the churches in the region and he designed the repairs to ecclesiastical buildings that suffered damage during the Second World War. Hand drawn plans still exist in the company’s archives for proposals to repair the essentially destroyed St Julian’s Church off Rouen Road in 1951 as well as improvements to St Peter Mancroft & St Nicholas Chapel in 1957.

As the practice expanded, it moved offices to its current location on Yarmouth Road in the 1960s , where members of the family still remembering living. But with the practice becoming multidisciplinary & offering quantity surveying & engineering services as well, the building is now principally occupied by Chaplin Farrant.

Today Chaplin Farrant employs over 30 people in the Norwich office across its three major service areas & is working on numerous projects throughout the eastern & southern region, particularly in the healthcare, retail & residential markets.  The practice has a reputation for providing cost effect & imaginative designs & current projects include the first council houses for Ipswich Borough Council for over 40 years with a scheme for 120 affordable homes at Bader Close, Ipswich.  The company is also currently working on the redevelopment of Banham Poultry site at Attleborough which includes the relocation of the existing factory and providing a mixed use scheme in the town centre.

“As we go into our 75th year, we are excited about the opportunities that are in front of us” commented Brian Smith, Managing Director “and we are undoubtedly finding the current economic climate a difficult one, as is everyone, but we are sure that the depth of experience & knowledge of our company stands us in good stead to ride out the difficult times and we look to ensure that the company is here for another 75 years”.

As part of the company’s celebrations, Chaplin Farrant will be holding a reception in February at Norwich Castle for clients from across the region who have supported the company over the years.  “This is an ideal opportunity for us to invite others from our industry, including developers, consultants, public sector organisations & private individuals, to an informal evening at the Castle to catch up & thank them for their continued support of our business.”

In addition, the 28 staff at Chaplin Farrant’s head office in Norwich will be raising funds for The Big C, with various events planned throughout the year.  “We are delighted to be supporting The Big C during our anniversary year” commented Brian Smith, “the staff almost unanimously decided to support this charity as it is clearly one that does a lot of good work in the region & has touched the lives of people within the company.” The directors of Chaplin Farrant have agreed to match the amount of money that the staff raise.
