Coronavirus has put a strain on every student since the pandemic began but West Suffolk College made a commitment to ensure students still received the best education they possibly can. Many students should’ve been completing their Work Placement alongside their course but as expected Covid-19 altered original plans drastically. The Work Placement Team worked hard, alongside Curriculum to become creative and think outside the box developing possible ideas that enabled students to still gain valuable insight knowledge and experience whilst remaining at home.

Gez Chetal, Owner of Thomas Paine Hotel has had an ongoing partnership with the college for a number of years and was interested in carrying on the partnership this academic year. With the help of Connie Gibbs (Work Placement Officer for Business and Travel & Tourism) and Zoe Pateman (Course Director for Level 2 Business) they were able to set up a 1 week project with the Business Level 2 students which enabled them to develop their course knowledge and transfer it into a real life workplace situation. Students were asked to generate a marketing plan, create promotional material and finally present their event idea to a panel of judges including Gez himself at the end of the week, with a winner then being announced. Connie has said “We cannot thank Gez enough for all his hard work to set this project up. Our students were able to gain valuable experience, even if it was behind a screen. Gez was able to provide this students with an opportunity that many other young people would’ve missed out on, helping them to decide what path to take next. Our students thrived and worked harder than ever before whilst completing this project.”. Students gave feedback describing it as “very successful”, “great experience” and “interesting, fun and exciting”. Some said it had helped them boost their confidence and helped them decide what future career path they wanted to take.
